WHAT IS A TIMING BELT?
The timing belt, or cambelt, keeps your engine’s valves and pistons working in sync. Over time, the timing belt wears down and can snap, which could cause significant engine damage.
We recommend that you replace your timing belt in line with your manufacturer service schedule which are happy to look for you and advise.
If your timing belt drives your water pump then this will be replaced at the same time.
SYMPTONS OF A FAULTY TIMING BELT?
Identifying a faulty timing belt can be tricky as it’s an internal engine component. However, there are some signs and symptoms that can help you spot a faulty timing belt:
- Ticking noises: If you hear ticking or clicking sounds from the engine, your timing belt could be damaged.
- Engine problems: A fault with your timing belt can cause a problem with your engine’s timing, potentially leading to poor performance or a rough-sounding engine.
- Hard stalling: Stalling can be caused by timing belt issues, as the balance between the camshaft and crankshaft is disrupted.
- Loss of power: A timing belt slipping or broken can lead to a significant loss of power, as your engine may not work correctly.
- Visible damage: Sometimes, you may be able to spot visible signs of timing belt damage, such as cracks, fraying or missing teeth.
WET BELTS
Some vehicles, notably Fords and Peugeots, are now being fitted with a “wet belt” system. These are much more complicated than a traditional timing belt and are a lot longer and more expensive to replace.
